Qualifying Rounds 5/6 Silverstone 2014
P12 FOR MATT
Cracking job ! Qualifying P12 with THM Racing at Silverstone.
Silverstone May 31st 2014
Today's qualifying would be a true test for THM Racing Technical Team and Trevor Humphrey, Technical Director, after the team furiously developed, engine and management systems in the THM Racing Golf after a “disappointing Rockingham “
Having arrived at Silverstone the team set to work building the THM Racing Paddock garage and hospitality unit at 8.30am finishing in record time ready for lunch, weather although not bathed in sunshine looked to remain dry through out the day.
Matt Hamilton too had plenty to do, “I'm really looking forward to todays qualifying, I love Silverstone! Although I have raced here many times I haven’t driven this track configuration, so its going to be a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The team have done a fantastic job on the car, we haven’t tested, so I have no idea what to expect from the car.”
During qualifying Matt Hamilton spent the first few laps getting to know the track, it’s twists and turns, it’s characteristics, Matt also got a rather sharp introduction into the Golfs new breath of life, a result of the teams dedication to competing at the highest possible level.
Matt Continues “cracking performance from the car, what a difference, we still have some work to do, the suspension gave me a few surprises, by the time I had sussed the track and discovered a few secrets, the tyres had gone off” Matt smiles “ but I still managed to put my best time in on the last lap”. It’s good to have the car running well, thanks to the team, they did a fantastic job”
On tomorrows race Matt is very very positive “I’m looking forward to tomorrow, the team will tweak the front end and we will be ready, I’m looking forward to getting back in the pack and I will be charging hard to move up the places and turn in a solid result for the team”
Trevor Humphrey was optimistic too “after Rockingham we had plenty of work to do to get the car competitive. The guys have been fantastic, we've undertaken a programme of developments to the powertrain, thanks to Ben at Shark for giving us a competitive package, it all looks extremely encouraging, I’m quite happy, now we can crack on with what we are here to do, race and win!”
The end of Second World War had left Britain with no major race track but an abundance of airfields. One of these surplus airfields was located outside the village of Silverstone and being roughly in the middle of England was seen as an ideal location, to bring back international motor racing to Britain.
By 1948 The Royal Automobile Club arranged a 1 year lease with the Air Ministry in the spirit of optimism and possibility that characterised the time. An ex-farmer, James Wilson Brown, was employed by the RAC and given just two months to turn the site from a wartime airfield and farm into a race track for the first RAC International Grand Prix.
On the 2nd October 1948, with hay bales and ropes protecting the piggery and the crops in the middle of the circuit, and canvas barriers stopping the drivers from being distracted by cars coming the other way, an estimated 100,000 people flocked to see Luigi Villoresi beat a field of 22 others in his Maserati. Silverstone racing history had started.
Today there are 4 circuits at Silverstone, The Grand Prix circuit, The International circuit, The National circuit and the Stowe circuit. The Volkswagen Racing Cup takes place on The Grand Prix Circuit – also used for the British Touring Car Championship, MotoGP and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
